Ya know, I've been thinking again. Thinking about what exactly it means to be a warrior and a soldier. The word warrior stems from Middle English with relations to the Old North French word that litterally means "to make war." In todays terms, being a warrior has come to mean someone that is experienced in warfare or a fighter. All of these are of course valid defenitions. Unfortunately what is neglected is what being a "warrior" has come to mean in terms of values. You can fight all you want, but when it comes down to it, are you fighting FOR something or are you fighting AGAINST something, or are you just fighting to fight? What values do you really base your actions on. or are you just fighting so that you can see yourself as standing ten feet tall, bristling with power.
In my own case, I am forced to adhere to a set of values that, over time have become institutionalized. I find myself wanting to live up to these values. I wish I could say the same for all who appoint themselves warriors. Being a soldier, which involves being a warrior, isn't just about being tough or hard, it's about the team and getting a job done to save lives.
I wish civilian life were imbued with the same import.
