It was pretty good. I thought it was actually better than Avengers. They started from the beginning and the film did an excellent job in making it feel like you're not rehashing old territory. The direction is a bit more serious, but still pulled off humour well and had overall great qualities.
Best new thing I really liked was the casting. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were wonderful and easily beat Tobey and Kirsten by miles. Though considering the last Spidey film had me liking James Franco and Thomas Haden Church more than those two, that's not really saying much.
Here's something you never saw in the Raimi films, a love interest that's not dumb and useless. Not only is Gwen Stacy never once taken hostage throughout the movie, but she actually tries to help out our hero as much as she can. Raimi's Mary Jane can really take notes here Miss I can't even eat lunch in the cafeteria without needing Peter to save me. At the end Gwen becomes the type of female love interest I can really root for and want to see back as oppose to an annoying damsel.
One new thing I was worried about in this movie was bringing in the web shooters. This movie's explanation for it is that Oscorp has a special room where they're breeding hundreds of genetically engineered spiders and among their purpose is to make their webbing into a product. The web shooters themselves was very rushed in the making. Peter seems to have unlimited ammo too. The filmmakers must've realized it's a silly idea and purposely flew by it as quickly as possible. So I still can't decide what I feel about them.
Outside that, great film. It had me more emotionally invested than any of the previous Spider-man films. Also kind of mirrors the X-men franchise. Didn't really care for the previous movies of the franchise. Thought both Spider-man 2 and Wolverine 2: United were overrated drivel since they got the most praise. Thought the most recent reboots, this and X-men: First Film, were easily the best in the franchise and the audience I watched with clapped at the end of both movies.
I became too invested in it that something was being brought up that has me worried. Which is if this new series follows the comics, Gwen Stacy is going to get killed! You know that bridge scene in the first movie where Green Goblin gives Spidey a choice? In the comics that was Gwen in Mary Jane's place and Spidey was only able to save the children. The filmmakers seem not to want to tread familiar territory, so hopefully they don't do this cause I really like Emma's Gwen Stacy. If they want to follow the comics, then instead of killing her, I prefer the filmmakers pull a 180 and go the Ultimate Spider-man route of making Gwen Stacy Carnage. I quite frankly think Emma could make an excellent Carnage.
Also I think alot of people would pay to see Emma Stone single handily beating up Spider-man and Venom. She already has the brains and attitude to do so. I now end this with music from my first introduction to Carnage, the Maximum Carnage and Separation Anxiety video games. Could be her Carnage theme song.
