What kills me most about the
PTC's getting it's panties in a twist over this racy Paris Hilton ad how they can't see the obvious. The bigger fuss they make, the more cable bobblehead shows are endlessly playing and replaying the ad at all hours of the day, so at 7:30am when I'm walking into work I see Paris soaping herself up (UGH.) Not to mention, the priceless free publicity Carl's is getting off it. Come on, this is basic economics 101: Controversy+outrage=sales thru the roof. There's also the fact that with this case, they didn't have as much to stand on. This wasn't exposed 40 year old nipples or married lesbian friends of a cartoon rabbit or whatever, it was just a (supposedly) hot young blonde soaping up a car. Didn't I just see a beer commercial like this 10 minutes ago?
In short, the PTC people are finally looking like the self-righteous morons they are. The American People see it, and even their supposed allies see it. Check out what
Grover Norquist has to say:
Many conservatives, Norquist says, have grown uncomfortable with the increasing zeal for policing broadcast content. “It’s socialism,” Norquist says. “People are saying, ‘This is puritanical Puritanism.’ No, it’s still socialism, dressing it up and getting a minister to say it doesn’t change that.”
These strong words speak to a growing fissure between the fiscal conservative and social conservative factions of the Republican base. Perhaps fearing defections from true believers, the Parents Television Council (which maintains a nonpartisan identity) has gone out of its way to deride TV Watch as a “hired gun coalition” of conservatives doing the bidding for media overlords.“
But Norquist scoffs at the PTC’s assertion that he and other conservatives are doing someone else’s dirty work for personal gain rather than principled belief. He says that groups like the PTC are acting against the interests of families by limiting parents’ right to decide for themselves what content they want coming into their home. “You can’t have a parents’-rights movement without having some respect for parents’ rights,” he says. What’s more, Norquist believes that he, not groups like the PTC, speak for the mainstream of the Republican Party. “[Bozell] has spent more time talking about this than we have ... The truth is that nobody in the conservative movement, or damn close to nobody, agrees with him on this.”
Hahahahahahahaha!!!! [gasps] AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!
On a more serious note... the other extreme irony of this is how social conservatives got themselves into this situation in the first place. Voting for Reagan didn't get them to erradicate AIDS or homosexuality, the scourge of drugs, or abortion, but one thing it did get them was mass media deregulations & consolidations. Now all media outlets are owned by a handful of massive corporations who only care about ratings & selling advertisements... and what garners more money than cheap titalations like sex and violence? Come on. IT'S SO FUCKING SIMPLE. The real elite of the country (GOP leaders) spend so much time distracting the masses (moralists and social conservatives) with the latest new outrage (drugs, abortion, homosexuality, gay marriage, sex on television) that no one notices when we start a new war for no reason, cut your medical benefits, outsource your job, ruin public schools, etc. It's been happending for at least 25 years and it's still happening. WHY ARE PEOPLE SO CLUELESS?!?
If these groups like PTC really, truly wanted to eliminate smut and unpleasantness from the airwaves, they wouldn't attact Hollywood & Madison Avenue, they would attack Rupert Murdoch and the multinational corporations. That's never going to happen... and that's why I'm never going to take a word Brent Bozell says seriously.
