...When I lived in Bali rape didn’t exist. It didn’t exist because the men in the culture saw it as a male problem and they went after the man or men who committed this act. Men were disgraced. The rape victim went through a ceremony by the priests and was made whole again. She was not disgraced. The offenders were banished and their families felt the shame by the entire community. What a deterrent! There is no way America society will change so women need to drive the demand for justice.
She may be right about American society as a whole, but I'd like to think maybe we could begin to turn that tide, but the shame where it belongs.
And it's not much comfort, but I'm very impressed with Jamie Leigh Jones. She's suing them, she's started a foundation for women like her, she's speaking out and not looking ashamed or afraid. If she were a member of my family, when I got done feeling homicidal, I'd be so damn proud of her.
No warning is really adequate, and nothing I could say felt vehement enough without sounding like I was advocating or threatening violence.
