Ohio state lawmaker introduces a bill that would give men "a say" in whether women get abortions. He sez:
"In most cases, when a child is born the father has financial responsibility for that child, so he should have a say."
As written, the bill would ban women from seeking an abortion without written consent from the father of the fetus. In cases where the identity of the father is unknown, women would be required to submit a list of possible fathers. The physician would be forced to conduct a paternity test from the provided list and then seek paternal permission to abort.
No. And not just no, FUCK NO.
And furthermore, as ridiculous as the argument about fathers being required to provide financial support and so should have a say is (uh, once the sperm is in someone else's body, you done spoke, asshole), it's a complete red herring. If that were the real reason, then he'd be asking that men be allowed to compel abortion.
This is about controlling women.
Feministing also says that, "Women would be required to present a police report if they want to 'prove' that the pregnancy was a result of rape [or] incest."
For maximum trauma!
There might be an out: find a sympathetic male friend to masquerade as the source of the sperm. But that would probably not work if the woman was married; I'm guessing the husband would still have a saycontrol.
I'm hoping NARAL's Ohio director is right, and this will never pass, but still.
