Headlines Grab Bag

Feb 01, 2007 19:53

I skipped my class tonight because there was supposed to be snow & sleet, and my class runs until 9:15, so I was worried about the roads... but so far, there's not a single snowflake, and I feel a bit foolish. Alas... but, this means I get to see Supernatural without waiting hours for a torrent, plus it means I get to post tonight! Whee.

++ Al Franken running for Senate in Minnesota. Coolness.

*curiously raises eyebrow* Hmmm. Oh, man, if Patty Wetterling gives the Sixth yet another run, I think my local newspaper will explode.

I guess all of it taken together is news, you're right. But I get so sick of seeing every affair of a political figure turned into front page news, ya know?

Eh, I disagree. It's really none of my business.

Newsom didn't do anyone any harm with the affair besides himself, Rippey-Tourk, and Alex Tourk.

He can date whomever he chooses since he's single, right?

I wish we as a society would divorce ourselves from this popularity politics and shift back to, oh, I don't know, public policy politics? :)

I work in the governor's press division, and I must confess just how sick I got of the incessant affair coverage.

However, I must also say that I mean no offense to you, especially you, jasminelily, because you and I have the same birthday. :)

The Gavin Newsom thing is "news" because he was being "groomed" to run for Governor of California after Ahnold, but now the floor's kind of fallen out from under him... it's a huge gaffe on his part, and he's alienated a lot of folks within the party. I mean it's sad all the way around, but that's why it's newsworthy, not for the affair, but for the subsequent scorched earth within his little corner of the party. After seeing Angelides and Bustamonte flame out, we're gonna be scrambling to find someone else worth running.

It's very difficult to find a Dem who can unite SF, Angelinos, and the rural areas, against the eastern suburbs of SF and OC/San Diego/etc. The dem constituencies are quite diverse and broad, whereas the GOP in California isn't particularly diverse or divided, they're widely considered libertarian-minded moderate economic conservatives, it doesn't take a magic formula to get them behind a single candidate.
