Breaking news: another adult shooting in a school
A gunman today took a dozen girls hostage at an Amish school in Pennsylvania and shot and killed at least three of them, then himself. Six other girls were shot and wounded. This in a school with twenty-five students.
Note to perpetrators of such shootings, whether they're hate crimes against girls like this one and the one last week, or random bouts of aggression: save yourself all the trouble and shoot yourself first.
The article calls this a "school shooting", but of the three they mention in the last week, only one last Friday, in which a student allegedly killed a principal, is a genuine school shooting in my mind. Based on past usage, "school shooting" implies a kid shooting other kids and/or teachers, usually cast in the "violent disaffected youth" narrative. These two instances where grown men have invaded a school to target girls are not part of that cultural narrative. They are crimes of child abuse and violence against women and girls.
The kids have suffered enough, lets not make the crimes of adults against them sound like a pathology of theirs. (Note to GOP apologists: That goes for the children who were solicited by Foley, too.)
