"Islamic Fascism", random news, and propaganda

Juan Cole has a great little tirade on the Bush administration today, in which demonstrates how divorced from reality Bush's "IslamistIslamic Fascist" rhetoric is.

Nor is it plausible that "al-Qaeda" could take over Iraq! The United States couldn't take over Iraq.
(emphasis original)

Ha ha. He also proposes, as others have, that what connects Bush's targets is not any radical Islamic ideology, but

Bush is undermining our Republic, gutting our rights, spending us into penury, and smearing a great civilization, in order to get his grubby fingers on the Ellipse. You get to pay for it twice, once at the pump and once on your annual tax return.

An Army investigator has recommended the Mahmudiya rapist-murderers be charged. But check out this disgusting paragraph:

David Sheldon, the civilian lawyer for Specialist Barker, is already contending that there were mitigating circumstances. "For 22 days, these junior enlisted soldiers were warehoused at one of the most dangerous checkpoints in the triangle of death," he told The New York Times.

Uh, no. Those might be mitigating circumstances for actions taken at a checkpoint, or on patrol. The stress and fear might explain firing a weapon under iffy circumstances. They don't explain going to a fourteen-year-old girl's house for the purpose of raping her and murdering her and her family.

Update on the health problems of 9-11 rescuers and workers.

It's more profitable to be retired in America now than to be working.

Friends of Hillary suggest she may not run in '08, because “The early line is that Hillary would be unstoppable in a Democratic primary but unelectable in a general election.” Like I said. I don't know if she can be persuaded not to run, though, both for reasons for ego and because she's the first woman ever with a real shot at winning the presidency and she probably feels that responsibility. I also don't like this talk of '12. It assumes a Democratic loss in '08.

Interesting history piece at Kos about the "first war on terror" in the 1910s and 20s.

Extreme drug-resistant tuberculosis, or XDR TB, is spreading around the world:

Multi-drug resistant TB is increasingly common and is difficult and expensive to treat. The patient must be given four out of the six existing second-line drugs.

But the XDR-TB strains now appearing are a medical nightmare because at least three out of those six second-line drugs have no effect. There are no third-line drugs.

The Army Bans Torture. Um... yay?

Valerie Plame was working on Iraq when Bush & Co. outed her.

This ABC 9-11 account isn't just partisan, it's fictional. It's a right wing fantasy. It's full of lies. (See ThinkProgress for extensive Path to 9-11 coverage.) And they're sending it to 100,000 schools with study guides. *gnashes teeth*

ABC has put their Path to 9-11 blog back up, but they don't seem to be actually posting new comments. They haven't posted any of mine, even though they were not abusive or profane. But feel free to try yourself.

ETA: Now even a former Bush counter-terrorism official has called bullshit.
