Breaking news: terrorist plot thwarted in Britain

Aug 10, 2006 12:11

'Airlines terror plot' disrupted.

A plot to blow up planes in flight from the UK to the US and commit "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" has been disrupted, Scotland Yard has said.

It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled in hand luggage on to as many as 10 aircraft.

Police are searching premises after 21 people were arrested. Home Secretary John Reid said they believed the "main players" were accounted for.

Of course my first thought when I saw Bush on my tv (and I mean all over my tv) was that this was another Miami-style situation to distract everyone from how much we don't like Bush, but this seems to be the real deal. Thank you, British law enforcement.

This may be an opportune moment to mention that Americans think Democrats would be better at running the war on terror, 46% to 38%. And yet, The Washington Post keeps ignoring its own polls and saying security is a winning issue for Republicans.

ETA (6:08pm EDT): BBC World News is reporting that there may be other suspects still at large in this plot, perhaps numbering five. There are concerns that there may be a "Plan B" in this plot. Today's arrests are apparently related to arrests of twenty militants in Pakistan earlier this week.
