- File under: "Stuff Only Tree-Huggers And luna_k Cares About:" Power Plants Agree to Slash Air Pollution
The power plants, including the two biggest coal-fired ones in the state, which are in western New York, and four more in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier regions, agreed to several measures to make them cleaner, including installing filters, switching to cleaner-burning coal, and shutting some of their oldest and least-efficient units.
The actions at these six plants alone will cut by more than half the amount of sulfur dioxide, the main cause of acid rain, produced each year by all the power plants and factories in New York State, according to data from the attorney general's office. And they will cut by more than a fifth the amount of nitrogen oxide, which causes smog and contributes to acid rain, that is produced by the state's power plants and factories.
Yay!!! Breath easier, little hometown of mine.
Btw, would it be presumptive and innapropriate to give to Elliot Spitzer's 2006 campaign? I haven't been a New York State resident since I was 9, but my heart is still in the Finger Lakes. ::sighs:: - From the Guardian: A man-made tsunami. This guy echoes my thoughts here:
Of course it's wonderful to see the human race rallying to the aid of disaster victims, but it's the inconsistency that has me foxed. Nobody is making this sort of fuss about all the people killed in Iraq, and yet it's a human catastrophe of comparable dimensions. According to the only scientific estimate attempted, Iraqi deaths since the war began number more than 100,000. The tsunami death toll is in the region of 150,000. Yet in the case of Iraq, the media seems reluctant to impress on the public the scale of the carnage.
