Markos of Daily Kos often annoys the fuck out of me, especially when he gets to talking about those evil "special interest groups" like the Sierra Club, NARAL and NOW. But his article The Soldier in Me, about how joining the military made him a Democrat, really touched me. Quick excerpt:

My father was a WWII Army vet and a lifelong Republican, but I think in those days Republicans were -- well, at least not raging asshats. Republicans actually embraced many of the values they claim to still have today: Fiscal responsibility, self-reliance, the ability to stand up and take responsibility for one's actions, etc. They're not like that these days (or at least, not many of 'em), and I think vets are either left standing in the middle or leaning to the left. As I've said before on this board, I used to think of myself as a moderate, but since Bush took office, I find I'm a raging liberal.
