Sifting thru the Harry Potter porn and other nonsense in my
Del.icio.us bookmarks:
++ NYT Magazine interviews
Markos of Daily Kos, who talks about his book and why Democrats are still foundering.
++ Last week's NYT Magazine further pigeonholed Mark Warner as
the fallback and the "anti-Hillary" candidate. Hmmmm. I'm still firmly supporting both prospects until at least mid-2007.
++ Speaking of sunday magazines, the cover story on WaPo's is about
day laborers & the Minutemen of Herndon, which is the town literally 5 miles away from me, so I've been following this story closely for a year. Here's my favorite part of the article:
When the Minutemen first appeared here in October, many of the undocumented workers assumed the worst: U.S. immigration agents in street clothes had come to the hiring site to gather evidence and apprehend them. Some workers bolted from the parking lot and didn't leave their apartments in search of work for days, with a few of the most frightened fleeing Herndon altogether, according to other workers. But the laborers' fears have receded. They've learned that neither federal immigration officials nor town leaders have played any part in what has been happening, that the strangers are simply local residents with a beef against them, powerless to do anything more than protest.
Basically, these Minutemen are an extremely vocal minority of disgruntled racist fuckheads conservatives with way too much time on their hands. They can go around with placards and signs, stalking day laborers and the people who employ them, but as long as the need for laborers remains, they're not gonna change much.
Sorry, went off on a bit of a rant there.
++ Last week WaPo's travel section had an article about how foreign tourists view the U.S., specifically how two
British ladies viewed Manhattan. I loved how shocked they were at huge American portions and all our confusing taxes & tipping customs. ;)
++ Apparently, FNC's Brit Hume has Spongebob Squarepants on his
target list. Poor gay Spongebob, they never leave him alone. Isn't it time to out Dora the Explorer as a lesbian or something?
++ I'm sure this NYT article has already made the rounds:
Wal-Mart Enlists Bloggers in P.R. Campaign. Hello to the desperation.
++ Sorry Creationists Intelligent Designers:
Hundreds of Human Genes are Still Evolving. Also,
New Images Support 'Big Bang' Theory.
++ The
Antarctic Ice Sheet Is Melting Rapidly, like way faster than imagined. Also,
Global warming gases at highest levels ever. But global warming is all a lie, the dude who wrote "Jurassic Park" told me so!!! On the plus side, a federal court just cock-blocked the Bush administration,
rejecting looser emission rules. Woot!
++ You know, I grew up very poor when I lived in rural Upstate New York. We lived in a trailer (not a trailer PARK, mind you, just a trailer on a farm) and we didn't have very nice clothes and my mother couldn't get her hair done in a fancy salon, etc. Our water wasn't safe to drink, and we had to get bottled jugs or water from a spring. Some of my friends didn't have indoor plumbing at all. I can tell you for a fact that there wasn't anything "CHIC" about living in a trailer... so
this article about the so-called "Trailer Park Chic" trend makes me want to scream
++
Bird flu found in Israel, with 1,000 turkeys dead from the virus. Meep.
++ Finally, I'd like to share a heeeelarious joke from Larry The Cable Guy, who
visited my fair suburb last week:
"You know the difference between a toddler and a terrorist?" The crowd waits, tittering. "On a terrorist, the diaper is on the head!" Biggest laugh of the night.
Oh my god, that is SO FUNNY! Seriously, that's the FUNNIEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE! I mean, how does he come up with such clever witticisms?!?
*cries forever*
