Today was a busy, busy day - I went straight from work to three doctor's appointments in a row, and I'm just now catching up with what was apparently a very full news cycle.
++ I heard about the "Dewey defeats Truman" media about-face re: WVA mine explosion just as I was leaving work this afternoon. Right now I'm just kind of numb and devastated... my grandmother's family comes from that part of West Virginia, my great-grandfathers were coal miners back in the day, etc so this hits me kinda close to home. I'll have a full post up later, but for now check out my
Sago Mine bookmarks.
++ Ariel Sharon's health took a sharp turn for the worse tonight. From the
AP:
JERUSALEM -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a massive stroke Wednesday and was on a respirator after falling ill at his ranch. Doctors operated to drain excess blood from his brain.
Powers were transferred to his deputy, Vice Premier Ehud Olmert.
Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef, director of Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, said Sharon suffered "a significant stroke," adding that he was "under anesthetic and receiving breathing assistance." A few minutes later, Mor-Yosef emerged to say that initial tests showed Sharon had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, or bleeding in his brain.
It's hard for me to imagine an Israel without Ariel Sharon. As someone on Metafilter pointed out, "Say what you will about Sharon's tenure, his death now would send shockwaves through the Israeli political establishment and through the region." Indeed.
++ Did Bush really
wire-tap Christiane Amanpour? Oh, HELL FUCKING NO. You don't mess with Christiane, bitch.
++ Um...
WTF?
So yeah, it looks like King George has
dissolved Congress. Who needs the pesky Senate for "advice and consent" when a recess appointment will work just as well?
I can't even work up the outrage anymore, y'all.
++ In happier news:
D.C. Council Approves Smoking Ban. YAAAAAAAAAAAY. I know friends like
girlfromsouth are devastated, but if they could do it in Manhattan, we'll survive it here. I PROMISE. *dances happy dance*
