Ford caves to bigots, feels the wrath of the blogosphere

So, last week the American Family Association brags about how their threat of a boycott of Ford caused Ford to pull advertising out of some gay publications like The Advocate. And over the weekend, Americablog raised hell about it, calling and emailing Ford. Today Paula Zahn's show did a piece on the uproar on CNN. Kinda cool, actually. One thing I object to is that articles about this tend to follow Ford's pitiful excuse: that they're caught in a tough spot, between gay rights activists and conservative family groups. Zahn called it one of those "damned if you do" stories. I suppose on the surface that's the case, but as is too often true in the media, they're treating the two sides of this issue like they're morally equivalent.

Gays want to exist and be treated as human beings. Anti-gay groups want them not to exist, or barring that, not to be treated as human beings. Those are not morally equivalent positions. As John said over and over this weekend, would Ford pull ads from Jewish and black media if the Klan demanded it?

And it's not just a matter of where Ford puts its ads, although Ford would like you to think so. The AFA said it was going after Ford for things like offering benefits to partners, because that was too much like gay marriage. Contrary to what Zahn would let people think, this isn't just about where Ford advertises, or risque ads.

But, on the bright side, Americablog makes Ford look like asses... again... when they show that one of the anonymous posters defending Ford was posting... from inside Ford. Ha! Pwn3d.
