Taking stock on Fall 2008 Campaign
Time to take stock of Dynamo's 2008 Fall Campaign. There are many positives. Victories home and abroad, promising showings for both youngsters and experienced veterans.
Coach Syomin has been able to mold this collection of disparate talents into a very capable team. These guys, a year after a total embarassment in the CL in 2007/2008 season, were able to produce a workmanlike, highly respectable showing. Yes, they failed to advance, one of the very few failings this campaign. But their defense proved third stingiest in the entire CL Group Stage. They didn't score much, yet, they managed to achieve two wins and secure 8 points, while only a year ago they had failed to record a single point while producing 6 dissapointing losing displays.
Now, Dynamo, along with Shakhtar and metalist continue their continental campaigns in the UEFA Cup. Dynamo's next opponent is Valencia - a solid Spanish club with significant continental pedigree. Let's hope the First Channel Cup - a friendly competition involving Dynamo and 7 other leading clubs from the Former Soviet Union proves to be a worthwhile preparation for Valencia matches.
At home, Dynamo had jumped out to a huge domestic lead. Excellent form had seen Dynamo separate themselves by 6 points from the second place Metalist and by 12 from their main rivals Shakhtar Donetsk. With 13 matches left to play in this domestic season, this lead might prove quite large.
