So below is a common recent conservative argument against the community center that is some number of blocks from the site of ground zero.  Oh, wait, ya, a community center with an Islamic prayer room which seems to count as a "Mosque" although I doubt that one would call a place where Christians can pray as a "Church" right?  I mean, when they ( Read more... )

If you take Timothy McVeigh's last words seriously, I am the master of my fate/ I am the captain of my soul, it seems he categorically rejected Christianity. Everything we know about him show him to be, at the very most, a lapsed, non-practicing Catholic who considered himself to be an agnostic. However, if he had been a rabid fundamentalist Catholic bent on installing a theocracy under the vicardom of the Pope in Rome, I would agree that the weeping Jesus would be in poor taste. But this was not Guy Fawkes or Mohammed Atta.

But he said he was a Christian, therefore he's a Christian. Life analysis is unnecessary!

He actually said he wasn't a Christian. But who wants to look even that closely. Being a "Christianist" fits the narrative.

Sure, and all terrorists were not "true" Muslims according to Muslims we agree with right?

So you are going by a last few words of his rather than his stated purpose of the bombing as revenge for the killing of the Waco Christian leader David Koresh? That's convenient , isn't it? Would it be tough to take some random words from anybody and say that it is a contradiction of what they have clearly stated many times their beliefs and motivations are? Nope.

You really don't know anything about Timothy McVeigh's motivations, do you? He was motivated by Ruby Ridge and Waco not because he had religious or spiritual solidarity with the victims but because he saw the Government's actions as unjust and tyrannical. McVeigh thought has a lot more in common with the folks who agitate against the Patriot Act than it does with any Christian sect. You'd have a much better argument saying it would be improper for Reason Magazine or The Nation to open an office across the street.

Oh, and I didn't tag this post. Nor do I think Obama is a Muslim.
