American Exceptionalism as put forth, where else, but in the
National Review.
"Like racism, genocide is a word that has lost its meaning through promiscuous overuse."
Nothing that is ever well thought out will ever begin with this sentence.
The point of this article is, naturally, the outright denial of anything True (white) Americans could do wrong. In this case, our perfectly innocent treatment of the Native American population.
The thing that amazes me is that, among the popular far-right punditry demographic, it's considered, by default, unpatriotic or worse, regressive, to try and view the past with an unbiased eye. It's fully within the realm of possibility to admit that we didn't come from unicorn forefathers filled with candy cane farts. We don't have to commit suicide because our forefathers weren't perfect, having made mistakes doesn't preclude our ability as a nation to do something right. We can't expect to move forward without confronting the mistakes of the past like adults.
The same people tried their damndest to co-opt "feminism", a concept they considered useless at best and destructive of the American family at worst. When Sarah Palin ran it immediately became "their turn" to be the oppressed feminist victims, even though Sarah was the ultimate token female. She could be counted on to do no more for women than pull the ladder up behind her. People played the "sexist" card when they were legitimately questioned about her qualifications. Why? Because they were deluded into thinking they were being called racist for questioning Obama's. They have no respect or even understanding of the concept of oppression, that's why they can just assume it's a pocket ace you can whip out to Get Out of Argument Free*. Nobody in the Obama campaign staff was on TV calling people racist for disagreeing with him. The only time it even happened was after Ferraro played the card first and an Obama staff member was fired shortly thereafter for basically saying, "God what a bitch."
Acting like Sarah being elected VP meant anything more for women than Obama's election meant for black people is ridiculous; it's pretty cool, all things considered, but the fight for equal rights isn't just a big set of benchmarks like Xbox achievements.
I got way the fuck off track here, but yeah, let's talk terminology.
