questions for my candidates

Apr 21, 2010 18:15

I've just sent the following email to all my candidates except Labour, Tory and UKIP (because I am not considering voting for them) through this handy website.

This got long. )

democratic reform, politics, civil liberties, elections, queer activism

Interesting. The only thing in their manifesto that seems to relate to what you're saying is this item:

"An independent foreign policy, based on international solidarity - no more being a US poodle, no moves towards a capitalist, militarist United States of Europe, no Lisbon Treaty."

I have to admit I'm not sure exactly what that implies. I'm pro-Europe and pro-globalisation, but not pro-global capitalism, so it'll be interesting to find out exactly where and how my stance diverges from TUSC's.

If that's the only thing in their manifesto I disagree with, though, and it looks like they stand a chance of winning, they're still doing better than the Greens and Lib Dems - both of whom have policies that piss me off, or have done things recently to put me off voting for them. My aim is to vote for the person most likely to get Lammy out; I don't have to agree with everything they stand for. If that's the LD's then so be it - I was sort of assuming it would be - but I've not heard a peep about a Lib Dem campaign in Tottenham, so it's really hard to tell. Presumably the national campaign will have an impact but Tottenham seems a very local, community-minded constituency, so I'd expect the candidates with strong local engagement and policies to do better.

Fair enough - not a million miles away from my approach to Raynsford - but in Tottenham, I'm pretty much certain that's not going to be TUSC! Do let me know ow it goes, though.

(Pragmatically, I think being anti-American and also anti-EU is somewhat unworkable, as isolationism is not really very splendid at all. While there's plenty of EU policy & law I don't agree with, I regard the immediate alternative as substantially worse, and have very little time for raving anti-EU nutters.)

Yeah, I'm not sure it's going to be TUSC either but in the lack of a strong Lib Dem campaign I fear the left vote is going to be hopelessly split anyway...

Are you saying TUSC are anti-American or I am? I'm a bit confused about where that came from!

I was referring to your quote from tusc's manifesto, and more generally.

Did you see Monbiot's article today about why radical politics are more acceptable in Wales. Amusing coincidence, as A & I were trying to think of good constituencies for tusc and we did speculate about Merthyr...
