Polar bears are the biggest and strongest animals in the Arctic. Polar bears are not frightened of other animals. None of the other animals even challenge the polar bears. Polar bears belong to the bear family. They are almost related to brown bears. Polar bears enjoy the land as much as the water. The polar bears spend most of their time on land and use the sea as a feeding ground.
Polar bears have white, thick, creamy fur that helps them keep warm and is a good camouflage on the snowy landscape. An average male polar bear weighs over 1,000 pounds and is about ten feet long. A female polar bear is much smaller. They are about eight feet long. Sometimes Alaskan polar bears weigh over 1,500 pounds.
Polar bears are only in the Arctic. When the snow melts in the summer polar bears move farther north. After the snow comes back the polar bears come back a littler farther south.
Polar bears live in 5 different countries. They are the United States, Canada, Greenland, Russia, and Norway. All these countries have people who hate polar bears and hunt them.
Polar bears are very curious animals. When they sniff something they stand on their hind legs to get a better scent. They will follow different kinds of tracks for many miles. The polar bears are very sensible about their food. Polar bears surprise attack a lot to get food. Polar bears do not have good eyesight, but polar bears are lucky because their sense of smell is excellent. Polar bears can smell a seal far away.
Polar bears hunt alone. Polar bears like seal meat the most. Polar bears sneak up on seals very quietly and carefully. When polar bears eat seals they eat some parts of the seal and leave the rest for the Arctic foxes.
Did you now that polar bears eat about 8 pounds of food a day? Sometimes some polar bears get left behind so all that they eat are leaves and berries. But what they like each day is meat and they will eat other sea mammals.
