Eponine's Lament (poems based on Victor Hugo's Les Misérables)

1. Waiting

I was right.
I knew I would feel it
When you kissed me for the first and last time.
Even though I was cold as the grave
And already far away.

Now all I need to do is wait.

I’ll wait for you to go the same way I did.
I know you will.
I saw you on the barricade.

I know you wish to die, as I did.
And believe me, my friend,
Where you are,
Death is only a matter of waiting.

2. The Agony of Heaven

I waited for you until long after the barricades were gone.
I told myself I’d see you soon.
I saw you - I saw you with her.

How did you do it?
How did you evade death, and me?
Why not fall with the rest in glory,
In the name of liberty?
Was it because of her?

Yes, she’s beautiful, but -
I hate to be petty but -
Did she die for you?

You’ve probably forgotten me
Because I can no longer appear out of nowhere
To remind you that there’s another kind of misery.

But I can see you,
And mostly, I can see her.
And I can see why you’d stay for such a lovely creature.

After all, who wouldn’t choose
A life with her
Over eternity with me?
