Email 3, in London again about a week after the Jamboree
Hi Everyone,
Well I've finally recovered from Jamboree thanks to the wonderful host family I had in Ireland. Cian and Mel. Mel was a wonderful cook and cos Cian had also been on Jamboree the first few days were fairly relaxed and we slept in very late!
We went down to a small town called Glendaloch and paddled in the Upper lake there, I wish i'd had my bathers with me because the water was warmer than I expected. THe scenery gorgeous too. Close to the lake was an old monastry and cathedral, more ruins than cathedral now, but it was buldin the 1000s and became unused other than as a cemertry in 1214. The cemertery part of it was awesome, there seemed to be no logical pattern to any of the gravestones and they were all so old and falling over. THere was a little bridge we had to cross to get intot he cemetry and there was a young boy out the front playing a tin whistel, which would have just abouyt made the irish experience complete had it not been for the fact he was wearing a NZ Allblacks jumper!
The Irish scouts put on a Party (cailigh in gaelic) for us on Friday night, which John and Neil (other Rovers) also attended. Us, and our host family and the Rovers went out to a little pub in the city for a drink afterwards, we were all so parched after learning some Irish dances. I had my first guinness, and then one of hte guys decided that I might like a baby guinness, which I did. I'm sure it's somewhat sacriligeous to the guinness lovers but it's a shot of guinness and Baileys (similar to a cowboy with guinness instead of schnapps)
The next morning i went into town on my own, and managed to meet the other Aussies at the GUinness brewery for a tour. It was ok, but the speights brewery in DUnedin was more interesting. This one wasvery much for the tourists and wasn't the actualy workinsgs of the brewery. None the less we had a drink in honour of Lord Casey Rover Crews drinks around the world at the very top of the Brewery looking over DUblin. Karl an Aussie Rover was asked for i.d and then the girl felt bad and put a shamrock into the top of his beer.
I cooked dinner that night, Mum i did chicken lasange but did you knw they don't have packets of French Onion soup in IReland. I had to use Oxtail...it was the closest I could get. Tasted ok though.
We went to Croke park to watch some IRish sport, Kerry played MOnahan in the Gaelic Footy, and then Limerick played..someone...in the hurling. Hurling is an awesome sport! A Cross between hockey, lacrosse and baseball (sort of) Kerry won, which was good because John had told us that as who we had to go for as it's his team.
THe next morning was our final day in Ireland (so quickly!) and we drove across to the other side of the country...it only took 3 hours! we went ot a seaside town called Galway, where we went paddling in the ocean and wandered round the museum, and also had lunch in this gorgeous pokey little pub. I had the roast of the day, which turned out to be bacon..those strange irish people.
Anyway I'm now back in London and am staying with Sarah and Domenic and their three little girls. I got here today,a nd leave for Scotland on Sunday.
WIll write again soon, hope this email isn't too long and boring.
