Hi Everyone,
So far the Jamboree has been pretty awesome. I am working in the activity called the World Scout Centre with the people from WOSM (World Bureau of Scouting) so I'm feeling fairly important hanging round with all the big wigs (just kidding) in reality a lot of the staff here, some of whom are bureau staff are just young Rovers like myself which is awesome to be in such a young but dedicated team. This particular workgroup were also keen not to have more than one person from the same country working here, so it's very multicultural (as is the rest of the Jamboree)
The activities we are running can loosely be described as global citizenship activities as well as advertising to participants and visitors alike some of the work Scouts are doing around the world.
I have made some awesome new friends including Geraldine from Switzerland, Marcus and Lisa from Sweden, Rita from CostaRica, Jana from Slovenia...you get the idea.
One of the Irish boys i'm working with is absolutely obsessed with aussie 'culture' if you can call it that and keeps asking for aussie slang. Jeges is posting me over a copy of the Castle to show him!
This morning and today was really incredible as we celebrated the centenerary of scouting. At 8am the whole camp (47,000 Scouts) went to the main arena where all of us reaffirmed our scout promise in our own language but at the same time. It was quite overwhelming to think that despite the fact we were all speaking different languages the message we were saying was exactly the same. I hope you all had memorable and moving sunrise activities.
To celebrate with our work team we all contributed some food which we cooked after the ceremony so we could have lunch together. There were swedish meat balls, spanish rice, italian pasta and of course vegemite sandwiches.
I wish you could all be here, I think that a world event like this should be something that is on everyones to-do list, as it is an event which I can't accurately describe in words.
I haven't had much of a chance to look around the Jamboree site yet, as I've been working but I have tomorrow morning off to explore.
The nights in the adult subcamp have also been an experience, with Karaoke one night, and the BINGO the next.
One night after the bar closed an impromptu campfire without a fire started and different campfire songs were sung. The funniest thing was watching as groups who didn't speak english tried to teach their song/dance to the larger group, again most of whom did not speak english, at least as their first language.
The weather has been typical english weahter, with lots of rain and mud altough the last few days have been nice and sunny and feeling a bit more summer like. I did buy some gumboots though during the first few days and I think it's the best £9 i've ever spent!
Anway that's enough rabbiting on from me.
Hope you're all well.
Love Libby
