Expressing Creativity vs. Protecting Privacy

Apr 16, 2007 00:44

I just updated larnacor, and it got me thinking about privacy and creativity.

I consider myself to be a creative person. I like to draw, make things, cosplay, write stories and the occasional poem, and I spend a lot of time *thiking* about creative things. I know that a lot of you on my flist are the same.

So, here's an question to you all: where do you draw the line between showing off your creative achievements, and protecting your privacy and your ownership of what you've created?

I know people who have had their creative endeavours ripped off by con-artists, copycats and generally unoriginal people who think it would be cool to steal someone else's work and try and pass it off as their own. It's not fair on the person whose work has been stolen, and in general all it does is create hassle and hurt for them.

How far do you go to protect your work?

I think that people who create things, whatever those things are, should be able to show off their work without fear of having it stolen, but unfortunately we live in a less-than-perfect world where that stuff happens. I see posts about it all the time on deviantART journals where people have had their original artwork stolen, copied and sold by someone else.

I'm just curious really about what people think about this. I got to thinking about this because I was considering friends-locking my writing blog, but then I decided against that for a number of reasons - I don't think people would actually want to steal my writing, and f-locking the journal just creates hassle for people who might just dip into it occasionally out of curiosity (here's my wishful thinking that *anyone* would actually want to read my writing, but you never know! :P). I'm also curious about copyright, because it's something that I don't know the ins and outs of - yet I get the feeling that it's really a lot more simple than I think.

Opinions, people?
