rantage

So, a friend posted a bulletin, and this quote was in it:
To think our forefathers fought and died for the right for our nation to be a Christian nation--and to have this man say with pride that we are no longer that.

Uhm, huh? NO! They fought and died for FREEDOM OF RELIGION.... they were escaping governments that chose not only that someone would be Christian, but exactly what type of Christian they would be. They fought and died for people to be free to worship (or NOT worship!!!!) as they personally believed. I hate organized religion, and this is an example of why. Smart people with good sense get all stupid and righteous as soon as the G word comes up. Like the whole huge fit over the pledge...

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the socialist minister Francis Bellamy (1855-1931). It was originally published in The Youth's Companion on September 8, 1892. Bellamy had hoped that the pledge would be used by citizens in any country.

In its original form it read:

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. At this time it read:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy's daughter objected to this alteration. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

So, there's a short history lesson ya weren't looking for! lol

So, tell me something.... WHY are we acting like someone's standing with God (who may or may not be an imaginary being) is a huge factor in them becoming President? Has anyone actually sat and thought "Is this an SNL episode?" while watching anything about the candidates this time around? I sure have. Isn't it great? One of the "most power nations in the world" is quickly becoming the hugest LAUGHINGSTOCK. What happened to the times when Presidential Debates were an actual serious matter, and moved people to think YES! Things CAN be better! instead of becoming fodder for late-night TV jokes? All I can think is... This is the world my children are going to inherit? This is the example getting set for our nation's youth? And we wonder why they don't take anything seriously... If we get vague promises from our government, and an inability to solidy commit from the national leaders... are our children going to be much better? Even good parenting can't overcome some obstacles.

*shakes head in disgust* Anyways, if you actually read this whole thing.. thanks for listening to me mindlessly rant!
