I suffer from pangs of dishonesty when I use Conté. People usually admire the result, but I'm far from a master of the medium. It is possible to layer Conté endlessly, so I make umpteen mistakes and revise them. The best artists in Conté use their knowledge of light and precise crosshatching to create astonishing work.
I do love Conté, though. The amenable crayon gives great scope for experimentation and learning how small tweaks refine an image. I started using it about 5 years ago thinking it would be a helpful intermediary from drawing to painting. I've not yet started painting, and not done a great deal with Conté, but I learn new things from every use.
Two hours. Does not bear great resemblance to the
source image. I made the head heavier, more like a draft horse.
