Wednesday night I watched 20/20, where Barbara Walters spent the hour at Australia Zoo interviewing Terri Irwin. I cried. I guess it's weird but until I watched that I hadn't truly realized just how deeply Terri loved Steve. She referred to Steve as 'her prince' and watching her fighting back tears as she talked about how her prince was gone was heartbreaking. She also talked about their fast courtship and a time shortly after they first met where they had been out in the wild bathing in the water and Steve had kept getting in front of her to keep his body between her and the water so a crocodile wouldn't sneak up on her. Terri had thought it was an incredibly romantic gesture, and while it may be hard to imagine I have to agree. It was just so Steve. The way he asked her to marry him was also very typically Steve, it was all just so sweet and romantic in a quirky way that just made you realize that the Steve you saw on TV wasn't a persona he put on; that was Steve 24/7.
I also have to say, their daughter Bindi is an incredible little girl. She is every inch her father's daughter. I have no doubt that she will be carrying on her father's work and when she grows up she'll be a champion for wildlife, just like her father. Barbara asked Terri if she was worried about Bindi suffering the same fate as Steve and Terri said she worried about her like any mother did, when she got sick, etc. She would never want her daughter to NOT follow in her father's footsteps, despite what happened to Steve. Terri believed in Steve's work, and like many of us thought confirmed that Steve had always thought he would die on the job and that was the way he preferred to go. Not that he wanted to leave his wife and kids, but if he had to, that was how he wanted it. Terri carries a great deal of weight on her shoulders right now and I wish her the best.
