Well, I said I wanted to start reviewing podcasts I listen to, so let's try for Mondays...
For the first one, I'm going with fiction. Specifically Zombie fiction.
Mind you, I listen to a number of Zombie podcasts (call me a masochist, since Zombie movies give me nightmares), both fiction and non-fiction (Mail-Order Zombie), but I'll start with one that's in a great spot to start.
We're Alive (
http://www.zombiepodcast.com) is a full cast audio production that from the sound of it is put together by professionals.
The story basics is that Michael, a combat veteran, starts hearing explosions from the university he is attending on the GI bill. He gets a call ordering him to report to the local depot, and barely makes it when the highway is attacked by... well, crazies? When he gets there, only two other members of his troop arrive. They are then attacked by what was once a general, and take shelter in the armoury.
From here, the story goes on to collect survivors, find a safe place to hole up, deal with daily survival, as well as rival groups (escapees from the area prison).
The voice acting is fantastic, and the sound quality is great, unlike some podcasts where you can tell that the different actors recorded their lines on varying quality of equipment. And they just posted a video to YouTube showing the behind the scenes of the production. Definitely of professional quality.
The basic format they use is that each chapter is release in three weekly episodes, totaling between 45 minutes and an hour for the complete chapter, followed by a week off before starting the next chapter. Season one has been finished for a while, and Season two starts later this month, and in the meantime they've remastered the first chapter in preparation for offering a CD set of Season 1, which ran 12 chapters.
So, now is a good time to download Season 1 and get up to speed before Season 2 starts on the 23rd. If you like Zombie stories, this is definitely the Podcast for you.
