In approximately 8 weeks I will be in New York for 10 days. My goal is to lose as much weight as possible before then. Jon's little brother Timothy has recently lost an amazing amount of weight in around 6 months, I think it's a total of 70 pounds. He looks great, so I asked him yesterday what he did to get so thin so quickly, and he described to me a diet I've heard about before.
Basically instead of eating two to three full meals each day, he has been eating four to six small meals. He also says he's had no time at all for exercise so his weight loss has been solely because of this new diet. We talked about what foods you should and should not eat, and I'm not gonna lie it sounds like it's going to be difficult. But he's been really helpful giving me tips for how to avoid losing my initiative. Two meals a week will be normal meals; i.e. when my family wants to get dinner together I will join in as normal, or if Jon and I are having folks over for the fights and we're getting snacks I will snack the same as everyone.
He also warned me the first two weeks are the most difficult, and I will get hungry frequently. When I find myself hungry between meals, it's best to drink a glass of water and find something to keep me occupied if I'm not at work; cleaning, doing laundry, or even playing a video game for a while. I'm going to need to be pretty organized, especially since time will be short in the mornings due to having to catch the bus so early. So I'll be making all my meals the night before, and have them ready to grab out the fridge on my way to work. My one concern is breakfast, since it's important to eat breakfast within an hour of waking up. I'm hoping I'll have at least enough time for a small bowl of cereal, and then a piece of fruit to eat on the way to the bus.
My diet will consist of mostly fruits and vegetables with a small amount of meat once a day or every other day. I will also have a small amount of grains, like the Kashi cereal I bought today, or the wheat tortillas I'll be using from now on instead of bread. No dairy except low-fat yogurt, luckily I already love Yoplait's low-fat stuff and keep it in stock regularly. I've also bought protein mix, almond milk, and a large tub of plain vanilla yogurt. I intend to use all these to make protein shakes with some fruit in them.
It's going to be a difficult 8 weeks, but keeping a small goal like this makes it much more realistic and therefore attainable. It's not to say I intend to give it up as soon as my vacation starts, that's just not on my mind right now. There will be times when I want to throw in the towel, and at that point I'll be able to look at a calendar and remind myself how much closer I am to that vacation. According to Tim if I can keep it up that long, it'll be much closer to habit, and eating any other way won't be appetizing. Now that I believe. Ever since I've been regularly eating three meals a day it's hard to imagine how I was able to skip eating all day until dinner; at which point I'd eat some huge, greasy, calorie filled meal and then lay on the couch digesting it.
I will keep my journal updated on my progress.
