The self pity only lasted a moment, replaced by anger at Herbert’s remark. Better off without her? How can he say that? He thought angrily.
“Am I, Herbert? Better of with YOU, am I?” Dan yelled.
Herbert was taken aback. Dan sighed. He knew that yelling at Herbert wouldn’t help, no matter how angry Herbert makes him.
Herbert’s reply came out shaken, “That’s not what I… She’s trouble. That’s all. She’s moody and distracts you from our work.”
Dan should have realised it was always about the work with Herbert.
“Herbert, will you take off that ridiculous apron while I’m talking to you? THAT thing is distracting.”
Herbert looked down at his apron and, conceding that it was hideous, took it off. Dan got up and walked over to Herbert, helping him hang The apron on the hook next to the basement lab door.
“What do you want, Herbert?”
Herbert looked puzzled so Dan elaborated, “I think if it were up to you, it would just be you and I, and our work for the rest of our natural lives.”
“And beyond our natural lives,” Herbert said quietly.
Dan continued, “I’d have no social life. No relation ships. No friends. Just you and corpses for an eternity!” He poked an accusing finger into Herbert’s chest as he spoke.
“What’s wrong with me?” Herbert asked, infuriated, grabbing at the finger poking his chest. “I actually thought we were friends, Dan! But the minute a woman enters the room you forget all about your buddy Herbert! Did you forget who looked after you that time you went into shock? Who looked after you when that brat from the children’s ward gave you chicken pox? Or treated your stab wound in Peru? Fed you? Helped bathe you? I did everything for you till you recovered! And you can’t even pretend to care about me for an instant?!”
They stared at each other in silence for a moment, both shocked at Herbert’s outburst. It surprised Dan to find out that Herbert actually cared about him and felt that Dan had neglected him. Herbert let go of Dan’s finger, the fact that he’d held onto it for this long making the moment feel even more uncomfortable.
Dan hated to apologise to Herbert, but it was the right thing to do. “I’m sorry Herbert. I appreciate all those things you did for me and I should treat you more like a friend. I never thanked you for dragging me out of that tent in Peru, taking me home and looking after me. Thank you, Herbert.”
Herbert seemed weary of the apology, as though the words were lulling him into a false sense of security before ripping his arm off. “…Okay, Dan.”
Dan smiled at Herbert’s suspicious nature and brought him into a hug. This made Herbert even wearier, but once in the hug he relaxed into Dan’s arms.
“You’re oily and sweaty,” Herbert complained.
“You smell like corpses,” Dan retorted.
In that moment, Dan’s thoughts turned to his lonely situation. Just himself, Herbert and some corpses for eternity? The hug had now gone on for an awkward amount of time and Herbert went to pull away, but Dan held pulled him back into the hug.
What the hell? He thought, If I’m going to be stuck with Herbert might as well see if there could be anything g between us… otherwise I’ll date the corpses. He chucked to himself in his mind. He had never been with a man before, but he had never ruled it out.
Dan put a hand behind Herbert’s head, pushing it towards Dan’s on face. Before Herbert could start to figure out what was going on, Dan had pressed their lips together in a gentle kiss. Herbert instinctually kissed back, moving his lips in time with Dan’s. They kissed for several moments, Herbert gripping Dan’s shirtless back so hard that his fingernails pierced Dan’s bare flesh.
When they stopped, Dan still held Herbert against his much larger, muscled body. Herbert breathlessly gave him a questioning look that seemed almost innocent and confused.
Dan said, “I thought that if I am going to spend my life working with you, I might as well make the most of it… and to find out if you and I had any possibilities.”
Herbert asked, “Do we?”
Dan smiled and kissed Herbert again. He didn’t think Herbert would consider a gay relationship, but Herbert eagerly kissed Dan back, proving he didn’t mind at all. They opened their mouths to the kiss, sheepishly allowing their tongues to meet. Dan squeezed Herbert tighter as their small kiss became a long and passionate one.
Herbert pulled away, “Dan, as much as I’d hate to ruin this moment, we have to be at work in an hour.”
Dan smiled charmingly and said, “Maybe we can resume this tonight after work?”
Herbert: “Or in our lunch hour?” Dan laughed. Herbert continued, “We’re not going to forget the experiments and work altogether though, right? I know it’s easy to get carried away with the physical business.”
Dan laughed as they walked upstairs to get ready for work, “No problem. We’ll take it slow, Herbert. I don’t want to go too fast anyway and ruin things like I did with Francesca.”
“Actually Dan, I think THAT relationship was ruined by the re-animated dog in the basement.”

It's not great, the characterisation is a bit crappy and I think I change tense a few times, but it's better than nothing!
Also, check out my icon. I made it to celebrate
ridley_160 giving us a new fic! I made it by moving Herbert and Dan much closer together in photoshop. Feel free to use it Re-Animator fans.
