Just got done listening to the news not that long ago, and they're talking about the latest health care debate, how President Obama wants to have a public health option. Yet it seems like there are a LOT of people who seem to think this is bad. A couple of weeks ago, a friend told me about what she heard coming from Sarah Palin's mouth, how the ( Read more... )

As you note, rationing already takes place along income and insurance status lines.

Our system is highly inefficient. In many ways, single-payer would wring more of the inefficiencies out of the system, but requiring uniform electronic claims submission would be helpful in the long run although requiring subsidies in the short run.

Don't let the insurance companies fool you. They are afraid of the public option because it will squeeze their profits. Insurance companies are highly bureaucratic and inefficient and they set prices accordingly. A public option, even if couched as a cooperative or non-profit similar to the way the Blues originated, is necessary if for no other reason than to keep the insurance companies honest.

Even those of us with health insurance can't always afford healthcare. I'm doing without some medications now because they are third tier (brand name, not on the formulary) and thus incredibly expensive. I've switched in some cases from prescription to OTC because it's cheaper.

Long story short, I substantially agree with you.

As I note and as I have experienced.

I can't even find a job right now because the market in my area is so damned competitive. At least 30% of the local population is unemployed. How can you hope to gain anything if there's someone out there who needs the job just as much as you do?

That's mostly why I'm trying to get my book typed and polished and ready for submission. I can't wait for the local economy to "get better".
