I have never been more proud to be a Californian. /snort.

LONG POST SHALL BE LONG:

So. Here. Have a meme, AND AND AND LMFAO.

My friend writes state-tan fics, and she has this AU where the east side of america, and the west side of america are thrown into a kind of Civil war/modern warfare kinda thing. It's so badass. I love the West states. VIRGINIA FUCK YEAH. :DDDD And there's an I love her Cali-tans. America has been split into two people. East, and West are their names, respectively. ACTUALLY: America is still America. Alfred, dontcha know, but he's in hiding. This is just a snippet from her story that reaaally made me smile lmao. Her NorCal and SoCal make me smile. They bicker but work well together, and are like a teeaam. But then if someone else steps in they'd both gang up on that person/state. Just so awesome. Maybe it's just how I see Californians to be. We'd bicker about which half of Cali is better. NorCal or SoCal, but in the end, I think some/most of us would be all, "NUH UH. CALI'S BETTER THAN ____thisstate__" and completely ignore NorCal/SoCal boundaries. You can disagree with me, but a lot of the people around me are like this. :3

“This is crazy. Just crazy,” the state says, slapping the corrupt files onto the table. Unable to be accessed, delineated and thrown off axis. One of the other states takes a file and flips through it.

“Montana, are you sure it’s not a virus?” he asks, fingers running along the edges of the film paper.

“I’m positive, NorCal. I’ve never seen something like it.” Montana continues to pace about the room, arms crossed. “It denied access to every single federal government file in the state. The state officials are baffled and wanted me to ask you. I don’t understand.”

“Florida couldn’t have accessed it. It’s a state-centered system, not federal,” North California mumbles under his breath. He looks at the file under the light, tilts it, “Not seeing any footprints. Though I’ll have to run it through the checking powder for any virtual fingerprints. I took every possibility to make sure the state files are safe. It shouldn’t have been hacked. Not under my watch.”

“Maybe, it blew up,” the identical state next to him shrugs.

“That’s a stupid idea, SoCal. How could it blow up? And under our noses?” the northern sibling dismisses, continuing to scrutinize the tiny ribbons of code at the bottom of the file. Montana only quirked a brow at this arrangement.

“Or something of the equivalent,” another state adds. The other three states glance at the last, who is looking at the files blankly. “Perhaps, not exactly blow up, but the information deactivated in another way. Besides hacking.”

“There’s another way besides hacking?” Montana blinks.

North California looks at him curiously. The apathetic state doesn’t look inclined to continue. “What are you getting at Colorado?”

“Or maybe someone really is one-upping NorCal,” South California says, a mocking smile on his face. “And he’s just in denial.”

NorCal rolls his eyes. “Shut up.”

“What I’m saying,” the mountain state outlines, “-is that, rather than a fire blowing up the information, maybe something cooled it, disabling their operations. Like ice.”

“Ice,” the California twins say.

“This isn’t heavy machinery, Colorado,” NorCal deadpans. “Ice doesn’t stop computer programs.”

“That’s a stupider idea than my blowing it up,” SoCal remarks.

Colorado shrugs. “Just a suggestion.”

“Right,” North California says. South California only nods and smirks.

“Right.”

Montana rolls this idea over in his head. “He might be getting at something. The day before everything wiped out, there was a hint of a snowstorm at the capital. Maybe it froze it up. I’ll need to check.”

“That’s impossible. The storage room should’ve been insulated,” NorCal fires back, voice firm. Montana nods absently, tapping something out on his hand processor. “And if it wasn’t, I could issue a federal order to require it.”

“Whoa, whoa, hey, West put me in charge of that,” the southern sibling says. “You can’t just use stuff you want to use whenever you want to, NorCal.”

“I can! West gave me explicit permission to use that power if I ever need to.”

“Dude. Warming up rooms doesn’t need a fucking federal order. Just tell them! ‘Oh, the servers aren’t working in below fucking freezing temperature, so up up the fucking temperature, will you?’”

“They wouldn’t listen--“

“They will if they’re going to lose five billion gigs of information, stupid.”

“It’s frost.”

North California seems right about to smack his brother in the face when Montana clears his throat and repeats.

“Frost is covering the interior one of the servers we use,” the Western state says. Colorado is looking at the fighting brothers with a blank face. “Colorado was right.”

The northern brother stops and lets go. Content that his brother has stopped strangling him, SoCal slides back into his seat discreetly. NorCal only stares at Montana. He turns his gaze slowly to Colorado, mind computing.

“How did you know?”

“’s happened before,” Colorado says calmly.

“When?”

“A few days ago.”

“And you guys found ice in your servers?”

Colorado nods slowly, and delivers the punch line. “Not ice. Permafrost.”

North California’s voice goes weak. “Great. Permafrost. Double yay.”

“How are you functioning?” Montana marvels, placing his head on a hand. The other state shrugs.

“We don’t have an interconnected system throughout the state. It’s city by city, and two of my cities have been hit, one after another in less than a day. We mostly rely on paper records, for the state, so we weren’t as hard hit, but if a couple of my other cities got hit, then perhaps.” He pauses here, considers his situation. “I know it’s not natural-we don’t get snow, much less ice at this time of year.”

“It’s also not natural if it’s found stuck inside of hardware,” SoCal offers.

“You’re not helping, SoCal,” NorCal says, tapping his fingers on the tabletop. “Colorado, any idea to who did it?”

He shrugs. “No fingerprints. No clues. No one saw anyone suspicious. We decided it was a ghost, probably.”

“Hey, let’s think of it this way,” SoCal suggests, “Who can do it? Who has ice things and can target Western cities?”

“Ice? Anyone with an affinity for it?” Montana ponders. “Washington said once that it was half the Eastern states.”

“Why are we politicizing this?” NorCal says immediately. “There’s no way the East can mount an attack at a time like this. They’re too weak.”

“They can’t. But what if they can? Like a multi-pronged attack. Take us all off-guard when we’ve begun peacefully resolving our differences. Sort of. But that’s not the point.”

“Then what’s your point?” NorCal is staring at his brother like he’s crazy.

“The point is-we have to tell West about this. Alert this problem, compile it and try to track these unusual attacks. We already know that Colorado’s been hit, and Montana’s entire virtual infrastructure has been taken down. We have to document this, figure out the culprit and figure out how to stop it.”
