I'm going to christen my LJ with an overflowing of righteous indignation; fury called forth from the very depths of Hell, summoned forth to wash over the ravening hordes of tabloid journalists and leave their smouldering skeletons in its wake. All of this for my mass of loyal readers (Yes, both of you).
But why?
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/163925.html This is why. Here we have a newsroom that is full of idiots. The only way you could fit more idiots into this newsroom would be to chop them all into tiny pieces and view the whole grim affair as a challenge in tesellation.
I'm a serious writer. I'm all about ethics. That is why, in my post, I will include the lesbian scene which has caused such a ruckus. Yes, that's right. I am ethically obliged to provide this link.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVyH02GzDGQ&feature=related If I may now speak whilst you overcome your inevitable disappointment (and, I believe, echo your very thoughts) - where is the full-frontal nudity? Where is the well of depravity into which gamers world-wide are being thrown, to writhe in fits of voyeuristic degradation? Where is the lesbianism?
Whilst my willingness to provide sources graciously extends to alien love-scenes, it does not cover dictionary references. In this matter we must all simply agree that "full-frontal digital nudity" is a fairly misshapen category for side-boob and blue buttocks. (Though blue buttocks certainly are alluring - hello to all the night elves in the crowd).
(Protip: To avoid digital nudity, wear gloves! Ba-dum tsh!)
Journalists: look at your sources. It's not hard. Read the damn book. Watch the movie. Games are media too, you slack-jawed, inbred, uneducated cockmongers. For the benefit of the silly cow in the first video who told the world, with some degree of exasperation, that we should "look at the statistics, who's playing video games? It's adolescent males, not their fathers" (words to that effect - misquoting on a blog is a lesser sin than making crap up on a national news broadcast), I say this: why don't you look at the statistics? Did you even know that any form of studies had been done when you made that insightful remark, let alone read any? Gamers are an aging population. Last time I checked the average gamer was, indeed, male - but with an age somewhere in the region of 28.
All of this makes me wonder if there's any truth to those rumours about all the staff at Fox news snorting behemoth lines of cocaine and engaging in great, violent orgies on the newsdesk before shooting the broadcast.
Post-script:
Kudos to the lone voice of reason in that video clip. You got shot down mighty fast, but at least the anchor had the decency to start back-tracking a bit once you'd had your say.
www.penny-arcade.com have had a bit to say about this too in recent weeks, though I won't go looking for specific posts. They speak about an article published as a blog somewhere that seems to be the root of this whole non-issue. I had a look for it after I read Tycho's post, but it seemed notably absent from the site for which it had been written, though it is quoted in what I assume is near-entirety on multiple sites. Have a look for it if you'd like to get even angrier.
