On Self-Observed Science-Nerdiness

Nov 06, 2008 22:15

I have posted before about how in many ways I am a stereotypical male,[1] yet am very atypical in others.[2]

Similarly, I am not the typical nerd in some ways, yet I am in others.

I know, how profound am I!

Anyhow, today's revelation of my personality -- in lieu of not having anything else worthwhile to talk about -- is in regards to scientific nerdism.

One category of things that I have always loved -- ever since the days when mallon04008's grandmother took us to the Boston Museum of Science -- are... well, I'm not sure how to describe them -- those sciency things that sit on desks and look cool or do neat things because of scientific principles.

For example:
  • lava lamps (Mine is named Elena, and she is hot.)
  • black lights
  • pendulums and sand
  • those picture frame things that rock back and forth with some liquid to form waves
  • perpetual motion machines, a.k.a. "swinging things"
  • plasma balls (which cancel the ability of "swinging things" to swing, FYI)

My desk is surround by them, and if you are ever searching for a Christmas gift for me, there is a safe option.

(Not quite as "scientific" -- but I also love globes [especially old-looking, brownish ones] and hourglasses and sundials.)

There, I've confessed. Commence making fun of me....
  • stereotypes, self-observation, science
