On the Inverted Period

Jul 27, 2006 19:11

I like punctuation[1] and I like precision[2, 3]. In my great quest for coming up with more precise ways of punctuating sentences, I think English should begin to incorporate the inverted period. ·Just like Spanish brilliantly uses the inverted exclamation point and the inverted question mark, we should use an inverted period to start our declarative sentences.

(···I wonder if there should also be a special "period" for imperative sentences in normal and inverted forms...)

·Yes, it's true; here I have used an interpunct as an inverted period. ¿But why not? ·The inverted exclamation point and the inverted question mark have the dot more centered relative to the letters than raised high. ·I think it works rather nicely. ¿Don't you think?

(¡And while we're at it, lets have the interobang and the inverted interobang (a.k.a. the "gnaborretni")! Or am I just insane tonight‽)
