The sound of yelling from Adelle’s office was something almost everyone at the Dollhouse had become used to. Anger and upset often happened, by now none of the dolls reacted to it and Adelle was growing tired of the stress the job was beginning to involve. All the same she had been happy to see the new girl. Cassidy was a smart woman who had agreed easily to become the new doll in the house, she was also working as a psychiatrist.
Many of the dolls had found her support warm and good for their daily routines. Adelle had also found that she liked the girl. She was friendly and kind, uncaring who or what Adelle may or may not be, all she cared for was Adelle’s mental health. Adelle had appreciated that for a long time now but when the yelling echoed through the hallways she had suddenly appreciated the woman all the more. She had found a way to hide her feelings but now, exposed as a woman in love, a lesbian no less, she had been glad of Cassidy’s gentleness.
She had been ashamed for a long time about what she was and who she was. Now she made her way down the stairs facing the dolls one by one. Each person had been a little different. Echo merely seemed bemused, Sierra seemingly less bothered than the men who ‘handled’ her. None had made a move to attack however and despite November’s confusion and the look in Victor’s eyes she felt a lot happier about herself than usual.
The handlers, mainly anyway, had been a little accepting… except perhaps Alpha’s old handler. Adelle was surprised to find that she didn’t care about what he thought. She was glad to see Cassidy in the crowd. The girl’s brown eyes met her own and she found that the woman’s gentle smile was enough to ease any mistrust she had. Ivy and Topher had both been smiling and Claire was a lot happier around Adelle than she had been before. It seemed that she had never quite seen what people were thinking or feeling for her, friendship and love entwining around her now. Something she had next to never felt.
The old life she had had was turned upside down and she found that even facing that had upset her for a little while. Her parents had asked her to come home but she had refused knowing that they would attempt to guilt her into going back, back to where she had been, back into the closet. She had however accepted Cassidy’s invitation to come over. Somehow she knew that although the woman was designed there were aspects of her old personality that were built into it that gave her hope. Perhaps even when the girl got her own mind back she would be the same warm and kindhearted woman she was now.
When she had gone over to Cassidy’s home she had found that she was unprepared for the gentleness she was offered. Such sweet gentleness often made her cry and now she whimpered and found that she was choking on tears. She had been ashamed at first but upon feeling a warm arm around her she had allowed herself to cry. She needed to cry and she had been glad that she was rewarded such a chance.
“Are you alright?”
The softness of the words had made her laugh and Adelle shook her head, rewarded by a warm squeeze, the girl’s lips soft on her cheek. Adelle had smiled softly, glad to see the girl smiling at her.
“Feeling better?”
Adelle smiled then, feeling her heartbeat speeding up even as she spoke.
“Much… thank you.”
“You’re quite welcome.”
The two had fallen silent then. Adelle relaxing into the girl a little more, feeling Cassidy smile and tighten her arm around her.
“So, now that I have you here… how about you explain to me just what that was all about today? What on earth did you do to deserve being outed?”
“I got Alpha put into storage.”
Cassidy had smiled as she leant closer.
“I told them he needed to be put away…”
“Well, now he is… so… can we get on with the rest of it all?”
“By which you mean, figure out how to deal with your problems?”
“If you like.”
The two had sat side by side in silence before Adelle spoke. She talked about her family, her past, her present… what she wanted for her future. Anything and everything she could think of. Old wounds were opened and reclosed, bound closed this time. Cassidy had let her talk, seemingly content to listen and only speak when Adelle asked her a direct question. Anything else went unquestioned or unanswered. Something between them both drawing Adelle out of her shell and enabling her to breathe and talk, to allow therapy to have a chance to mend.
They had fallen asleep like that, Adelle wrapped up tight in Cassidy’s arms, restful and unawakened in the night for the first time in a long long while. When she did wake up the next morning she was glad to see how easily they had melded into each other. When Cassidy herself woke the two had spent a while talking about how to continue and just how they were going to deal with their new relationship.
Eventually Adelle had decided to just deal with it once she released the girl from who and what she was imprinted to be. Eventually the two had relearnt the relationship that had already been budding. Adelle had recognised that she needed to let the girl go early so that they could build their lives together. People had been a little surprised by how easily Adelle had indeed let the girl go, they had been further surprised when Cassidy had returned to work and proven to be a natural at the job.
Cassidy had adapted well to her new life… or correctly… her old life. Cassidy had smiled warmly and easily as Adelle came to her rooms. The two had begun to come close to having a proper relationship now and Cassidy had been happy to come out herself. Adelle had been surprised by how warmly their relationship had been welcomed, her surprise turning into intent pleasure when Cassidy eventually asked her to marry her.
