Title: Facing Boredom

Notes: My first ff_friday post and second Firefly fic. This one actually has ballooned to 2000 words and isn't yet done, but this particular snippet stands alone rather nicely. Post-BDM without spoilers.

Simon turned from the door control and sighed. "I suppose you have to go up to the engine room now."
Kaylee was already halfway to the stairs. "'Fraid so. But," and she offered a sultry smile, "only 'till we break atmo. Half hour maybe."
He responded with a wicked smile of his own and turned back around to survey the cargo bay. At least it wasn't cows this time, although when one of the black-market beagles came up wagging its tail and with its tongue hanging out, he wasn't sure this was much better.
He sighed again. An extra day to make the trip and with a cargo that was unlikely to cause much trouble (except to his nose). It was likely there'd be no need of his medical services, and despite recent...distractions...the infirmary had been cleaned about as much as possible. This was going to be a long trip.
