Happy Birthday to my favorite Defender of Nikita debating partner,
nell65! Here's a short ficlet just for you.
"Target acquired," came the voice over the headset. After a few more minutes of monitoring egress, Birkoff reached toward the bag of cookies for a cream-filled reward. Seventeen straight hours of work and his head was spinning in that distant netherworld of--
"Hey! Those aren't yours!" he protested as a hand reached from behind him and snatched away the cookies.
He spun his chair around. Nikita dangled the bag in the air, laughing.
"If you want these back, you'll have to catch me." She winked and sauntered off, throwing provocative glances over her shoulder until he finally groaned and got up to follow.
"Where are we going?"
She just smiled and donned her sunglasses.

She held out the bag. "Want one?"
He rummaged inside and withdrew a cookie. Munching, he brushed the crumbs off his chin.
"Tastes better in the fresh air, doesn't it?"
He shifted on the park bench. It was hard and uncomfortable. A bee circled his head like a yellow surveillance drone.
"Tastes the same to me," he muttered. "So. Why are we here, exactly?"
She pointed toward the horizon. Clouds drifted slowly across the cityscape.
"Because there are some things you can't experience living underground, Birkoff."
