eh.. I'm not that adventurous when it comes to food. I'm also not sure what counts as "weird" because weird for me might be completely normal for someone else. Anyways I guess the weirdest and grossest thing that I've ever eaten was a durian. *gag* Just thinking about it makes me want to puke.
Here is what Wikipedia says about the durian's odour:
The edible flesh emits a distinctive odour, strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as fragrant; others find the aroma overpowering and offensive. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust. The odour has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia.
While Wallace cautions that "the smell of the ripe fruit is certainly at first disagreeable", later descriptions by westerners are more graphic. British novelist
Anthony Burgess writes that eating durian is "like eating sweet raspberry
blancmange in the lavatory."
[20] Chef
Andrew Zimmern compares the taste to "completely rotten, mushy onions."
[21] Anthony Bourdain, while a lover of durian, relates his encounter with the fruit as thus: "Its taste can only be described as...indescribable, something you will either love or despise. ...Your breath will smell as if you'd been French-kissing your dead grandmother."
[22] Travel and food writer
Richard Sterling says:
“ ... its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia.
[23]Ugh! See I can't imagine anyone as regarding the durian as fragrant. To me it smells like a mix of rotten bananas, onions, and BO. It's also sort of custardy. Add to the smell the disgusting slimy texture and you've got yourself a winner, people. Not to mention it looks like it's trying to give birth to some kind of alien. Here, I'll dig up some pictures of it..
I agree with this sentiment:
Let's see.. I guess I've eaten some other sort of unusual things..
I've tried bear jerky that my uncle made from one of the bears he shot. I didn't really like it much.. could have been the way he made it, but it was really greasy and stongly gamey. I'm sure bear could be prepared in much tastier ways, though.
I've also had calamari a few times. I like it as long as it's cooked properly and it's not rubbery. Surprisingly the tentacles didn't bother me. I'm ready to try octopus now ^_^
I've tasted pate before... I'm not a fan. I hate the thought that it's made of liver and that it looks and smells like canned dog food. So, no thank you, I'll pass.
Uhmmmm I had Kobe beef hamburgurs one time. That was interesting. I'd have it again, fo sho.. It doesn't really taste like beef. Well the texture I guess is what's strange about it.. it's so tender and kinda fatty that it's.. I don't know how to describe it.. I'd eat it again but I don't know that I would prefer it over just regular beef.
