So, I'm watching a rebroadcast of "Total Request Live" on MTV, and right in the middle of scream of the typical youth-maybe, out comes Kurt Loder. Looking every second of his mid-50s age, he start pontificating in the most cranky, self-important manner about an alterna-rock act that the kids in the audience should be getting into. As I watched, all I could think was how this was the death-knell for the band (the New Pornographers, by the way). It was like having your creaky old Dad invade your room and telling you and your friends that you're not cool. Would you really take his advice? Or would you intentionally go in the opposite direction? Most kids I know (and have known) would opt for the latter... no matter how smart Dad is.
Now, as a 42-year-old with the giddy rock heart of a 14-year-old chick, I know that music is not (and should not be) limited to one audience. But this was the strangest thing I've seen on television in a long time. It's time to put Mr. Loder (who has rightly earned his industry nickname as "the LOAD," because he's such an asshole) in a more appropriate place in the MTV system. Standing among screaming kids who want more of Lindsay Lohan and Simple Plan is not it.
