Haven't posted here for quite a while, what with personal issues at home, work being insane since September, and sundry other RL interruptions.

Reserving judgement on Mr. Smith is about all most of us can do, I reckon. None of us, even if we have seen him before, know what he'll be like till we see him in the part, so that's the way forward IMO.
I'm truly ambivalent about Tennant's leaving to be honest. He's a good actor, and a fine comedic one, and he's had some lovely and great moments. For me though his tenure was hurt by Russell Davies writing, the whole Rose/Ten thing was a debacle and shackled him to a rather painful 'love' story that should never have happened. And then there was Russell's determination to write the Doctor as some kind of Messianic figure and that really undermined my liking for the character as a whole, never mind just Ten.
In addition, for me, some of his mannerisms have become repetitive and exaggerated and are getting annoying and that smacks of someone getting a little bored and less challenged by the part. I think Catherine Tate's stint as Donna helped bring a lot more life to the role for him, as he actually had a character/partner on his own level to bounce off of and play with rather than just 'react to' and instruct, and he sparkled again every time he was in a scene with her.
I would like to have seen him stay for one series with Moffat at the helm, just because I think the writing would've breathed new life into the part for him, and taken him to different places. But...new start, new writers, new Doctor. So in all honesty, won't be too sad to see him go.
