Circuit 5 [Chevalier Day]
[When Rfena's voice comes onto the communicator, it sounds somewhat wary. After talking with North, the assumed subject of this event, she's not sure she should be announcing it to the entire boat. But she wants to share something of her world with the boat, so she clears her throat before she speaks.]
If I've been keeping track of the days appropriately, today should be Chevalier Day. In my time, it's the anniversary of an important event in the history of Pets and Hybrids.
For those who don't know, Pets were genetically engineered helpers created by Persona Grata Science, also known as PGSci. [There are also two Pets, North and Sulphur, on board, but Reffy declines to mention this.] They were an artificial cross of human and feline DNA. They were originally engineered to be completely subservient to humans, but as time went on they began to become 'adjusted.'
On January 17, 2066, there was a riot at Talia Chevalier Rescue Services, and a Pet killed three humans and injured several others before he was killed himself. After this incident, Pets were declared too unstable to be used as workers and helpers, and were put into camps, while production was halted in order to decide what to do with them. Eventually, they were relocated to another planet, given the supplies to establish a colony, and basically abandoned. A robotics company named User Friendly took over the tasks, using androids to replace the Pets.
An odd thing to celebrate, yes?
During the fifty years after the Pets were abandoned, a movement began to give the Pets full citizenship and legal rights, and to reintroduce them to the world congress. On the anniversary of the attack, an amendment to the congressional declaration granting them this was passed, and contact was reestablished with the planet of the Pets.
After a generation or two of isolation, the Pets had created their own society, and had escaped the conditioning that had initially been installed in them. They took on a new title, Hybrids, and joined the world congress as their own society. They weren't happy about the abandonment, but by my time - 2168 - humans and Hybrids happily cooexist - there are even human/Hybrid children.
So you could say that if it wasn't for that one Pet, it might have been many more decades before Pets had gotten their freedom. If they'd gotten it at all.
Just wanted to share a bit of my homeworld with the rest of you...
