I don't suppose they could get a communications officer whose English was slightly less prone to ambiguity?

I saw this, too. A lot of people are leaving comments at news to try and get the message across. *sigh*

One percent of the comments? No, they probably don't matter. I don't mind losing the subject lines in comments. I very rarely use them, and personally, find them more annoying than helpful.

Opt-out is not really an option: It is really difficult to keep maintaining different code lines like that. And if only 1% of the comments use the subject lines, maintaining different code lines to appeal to *one percent* of the users to offer something that 99% of the users won't care about? Not worth it, from a business POV.

Oh, I understand it from a business perspective -- which is not to say I like it.

It just means that all the things that do use subject lines in comments -- kink-memes, mini-nanowrimo, comment-fic, some of the auctions and so forth will need to find another place to go, making LJ just that much less of functioning place for fandom.

I particularly object though, to the idea that it is going to be retroactive, erasing *past* subjects. I very much hope that the various comment-fic and kink-meme communities at least are made aware in time to back up their archives to places that will continue to support the subjects.
