I went to the memorial held at the University of Arizona this evening, along with many-several thousand other people. I was too late (at 4:20) to have a hope of getting into McHale, (the line stretched up Mountain to Second and along Second at least to Campbell) so I went directly to the football stadium instead, where the overflow was, and the proceedings were broadcast on the big screen in the scoreboard.
It was very moving and I am glad I went. I have three pages of notes and observations that I plan to type in, but this will do to start.
And I will say, that while nearly everyone who spoke was moving and effective on the screen, President Obama's *presence* was palpable in the open stadium, through all the electronica and in spite of the otherwise attenuating atmosphere. I can only imagine what being in the same air-volume must have been like. Janet Napolitano and the gentleman doing the opening blessing also managed to be present in the stadium as well as on screen. (I don't know if I am conveying quite what I mean. I hope so.)
