Musings & Meme-sheep
I was assembling a disk for lauramcewan of Methos-Duncan scenes (with emphasis on the proximity/subtext) last night, and it was fascinating to see the progression of their relationship. I went through the episodes in chronological order, so as to not make myself crazy or miss things, and except for the scenes I was recording (and a few particular favorites not D-M) was watching in fast-forward. Seeing the whole set commpressed like that made some things very clear.
Some of the thoughts that occurred to me:
Joe and Methos have a very strong friendship that just leaps off the screen in Finale I & II, and continues throughout the show -- including the films. In many ways their friendship seem more *solid* than either Duncan's with Joe or Duncan's with Methos.
The energy and chemistry between D & M blazes out from the first moment they meet, and while it changes over time, it never really diminishes. And the connection/attraction/zing is mutual, at least by the end of 'Methos'.
Duncan really does get worn/ground down by the continuing losses and grimness of the Game and what is happening. There is only a little of the sheer playfulness and antic glee that many of the flashbacks have in the modern-day, and most of what there is is in "Til Death". This is especially apparent in the second half of S5, after CaH-Rev. In the context of S5 Prometheus Unbound is really dark for both of them.
Duncan is earth and water, very grounded, almost rigid. Fixed or Cardinal, definitely Lawful Good (very occasionally Neutral Good) and largely the same all the way through -- what you see on the surface is pretty representative of the whole. Shield, cup, feeling. Methos is air and fire -- and mutable over a core of Self. Chaotic Neutral, blade, reed, intellect.
