First of all, congrats on the grade! That is beyond awesome, bb ^_^

As to you're question, I was homeschooled growing up so I didn't have a lot of the opportunities that public school kids get like sports and theater. It didn't bother me that much when I was really little, but once I got around 8th grade I took a summer tennis class taught by the high school coach and was told that I was really good and he would give me a spot on the varsity team next year. Only problem was, homeschoolers aren't allowed to be on public school sports teams. Needless to say, I was really upset that I wasn't able to do those things and tried to convince my parents to let me go back to public school.

I had quite a few fights with my parents about this. Looking back, I know my parents had a lot of good reasons for doing this, it's just hard to see any option but your own when you're 13 ;-) Eventually, my dad got fed up with it all and basically said, "Shelby, I love you, but going into public school isn't an option. We aren't discussing it anymore."

Fortunately, my mom was a little more understanding and after that last fight she started looking for any extra curricular activities that were available to homeschoolers. Sports were pretty much off the table, so my mom pushed me towards the arts which I was really resistant to. Eventually, she just signed me up for stuff whether I wanted to do it or not. But once I started, it was like a dam broke and I was suddenly introduced to all these new and interesting things. So I took classes at the local art center on everything from pottery to knitting to baking actually ^_^ I did productions with the community theater, I started taking piano and violin lessons, I joined 4-H, I started volunteering at the zoo and the historical society, I got a job at the public library, and loads of other stuff that I won't bore you with. ^_~

When it came time to apply for colleges, I got excepted everywhere and got some great scholarships, mainly because I'd been involved in some many 'non-acedemic' things in high school. A couple of the college interviewers asked me how I was able to fit so much stuff into my life and the answer was that I wasn't stuck in public school all day.

So that's my story. Mom made me learn how to draw and I got a full ride to college. Funny how those things work out :D

That's an amazing story! And Cheesus, my head was spinning when you listed some of your extracurriculars. I can see why you were accepted to the colleges you applied to. (:
I'm surprised your parents were so adamant about you staying home schooled, if only because I was in the exact opposite situation when I was still in home schooling. Still, kudos to your mom for forcing you to do things you originally didn't want to do!

Thanks for sharing, love. (: Take care!
