dis cutiePERSONALITY: "I'm not all smiles and sunshine!"
True, Vanille is practically the poster girl for cheer and sanguineness, but she's got her own battles and fears to contend with.
A sweet girl bursting at the seams with optimism, Vanille is the obligatory bubbly Final Fantasy party member. Despite grim situations, she always strives to keep everyone's spirits up, smiling even when others can't find it in them to do the same. Even in situations where the outcome looks dark at best, she remains an unfalteringly encouraging companion. Though she does have her moments of thoughtfulness and wisdom, there are times when she demonstrates innocent, childlike (bordering on childish) qualities. Fang describes her as a "scaredy-cat"; she is often timid or wary of her surroundings, but this somehow fails to deter her inquisitiveness. Her naïveté can sometimes prove to be troublesome, as she has a penchant for being a little careless, especially when her ever-present curiosity gets the best of her. She's strong when the occasion calls for it, and if people important to her are at stake, she's not one to back down from a fight. When it comes down to it, though, Vanille's a bit more of a lover than a fighter, even if she displays the qualities of both.
Vanille is an exceedingly selfless, caring, and kind, quick to offer a hug (maybe not totally with your consent) at the slightest hint of unhappiness. She often feels compelled to make right what is wrong and to ease away hurt as much as she can. She's a very nurturing person whose stubbornness becomes more apparent when her loved ones' health is at risk. Not normally one to nag, Vanille's timidity vanishes when it comes doing what she firmly believes is right. Though she is loath to aggressively argue and would much rather make nice with everyone forever, the safety and general well-being of her friends always comes first. No exceptions. Of course, she is also quick to forgive or apologize when she realizes she is in the wrong.
Of course, even the most merry of the perky Final Fantasy heroines have their darker sides or secrets. Vanille has the unfortunate tendency to bury her anxieties and dejection beneath her smiles. She is, as mentioned before, a timid and easily frightened person, but the true depth of this is often kept away from her friends. Instead of sharing her burden with the people who she knows care about her, she keeps her fears tucked under a cheerful mask, hesitant to reveal how truly scared she is. Even when she feels tremendous amounts of guilt, her negative feelings are kept to herself. Instead, she copes with her inner turmoil by running away from it. Her preferred method is reminiscing her happy childhood with Fang, when her worries were few and the daunting prospect of growing up and growing away was nonexistent. However, Vanille is beginning to recognize that facing problems later is sometimes necessary, but running away isn't something that should be done forever. She is working toward facing her fears and becoming stronger, and though an old dog can't be taught new tricks, time is sure to heal many scars.
It certainly helps that Vanille has people she values in Reims, strengthening her fortitude. Even those considered under the loosest definition of "friendship" are important to her to an extent, and her selflessness often wins out over her fear. Of all her friends, however, Vanille is most devoted to Fang due to their shared history. Someday, she hopes to help Fang protect instead of being protected herself, standing beside her instead of behind. She imagines that hope isn't so improbable; she trusts Fang inherently and completely, and at her side, she feels she can take on the world.
COMPUTER APTITUDE: Not too shabby, but she's no pro. She didn't know much when she first came to Reims, but she became so enamored with the fonts and colors that she picked up on basic HTML fairly quickly.
AU HISTORY: Vanille's early childhood was nothing spectacular. She was born in Australia to a loving mother and father, did her chores and played on the lawn, went to bed early (except when she'd sneak out to look at the stars) - all the makings of a normal life for a normal little girl. Perhaps it was spectacular in its pleasant normalcy in a crazy world, but it did not remain that way. An unfortunate accident took the lives of her parents, and, possessing no known living relatives, little Vanille was sent away to a neighboring town's orphanage.
The death of her parents left an emotional scar on Vanille, which would have thoroughly crippled her had she not met Fang. The older girl was wild and unruly, free-spirited and energetic; Vanille liked her at once, and the two quickly became inseparable. Fang beat up bullies who pulled Vanille's pigtails, and Vanille nursed Fang's wounds when she fell out of trees. Even if the other children were sometimes a bit put off by how joined at the hip the two were, and even if time and time again, their bond cost them the chance for adoption, as long as they were together, everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.
Reprieve from life in the orphanage came in the form of a wealthy businessman. He recognized the young misfits' potential, and, hoping to set the two on the right track, offered a sponsorship to attend a prestigious academy halfway around the world. It was a promising offer that was difficult refuse (though wayward little Fang did try), and before they knew it, they were enrolled at Reims Academy.
Both girls flourished in their new environment. As Vanille's chipper, sociable personality began to emerge, she joined clubs and occasionally even sports teams. She quickly took to her classes and did well in them, even when Fang graduated and left Reims for a nearby college. Thankfully, they weren't separated for long, as her best friend and long time partner returned a couple of years later, this time as a teacher.

LOG/3RD PERSON SAMPLE:
"Don't you think the dorms are too cold sometimes?" Vanille asks, looking up from her lunch at the girl seated across from her. Her companion, a fellow senior in one of her classes, gives her a strange look. "Not at all," she replies, airily waving the question off and returning the bulk of her attention to her own lunch. "If anything, I'd say the air conditioning is kinda weak some nights. Can't complain, though." Vanille smiles a little wistfully, fiddling with her spoon and tilting her gaze downward. "Heh, you're right," she mumbles, suddenly not hungry. "I guess it's just me."
She reflects on this short but one-sidedly meaningful exchange later in class, the teacher's voice gradually giving way to her thoughts. "It's just me," she repeats softly to herself, worrying at her lower lip in thought. She's different - they all are, she supposes - but she's especially different from the girl at lunch. Vanille often shared her bed with the other children during her time at the orphanage. For a large portion of her life, she shared it with Fang. Even when she finally had a bed to herself, she'd often sneak into her best friend's room, knowing she wouldn't be looked upon with scorn for the tears that would leak from her eyes in slumber. She misses the comforting warmth that seeped through her pajamas from another body, and she misses the way a simple hand curled around hers could dispel her nightmares.
Vanille doesn't feel lonely at Reims. Even now, she still isn't completely used to it, but it's all right, because it means some of the wonder left over from her childhood still lingers. It's difficult to feel lonely or unhappy at such a lively school, with so many different people and experiences. But there are moments, few and subtle but still there, when she remembers her life before the orphanage, when the "what ifs" unfurl like smoke in her mind, and a dull ache pulses in her chest. These are moments when she makes herself smile brightest, so no one can know that even she has her uncertainties. But it isn't bad here, really. It's quite nice. In fact, Vanille would say it's pretty great, and despite everything, she wouldn't go back. She hates aching for the past, but it's better than giving up her present and her future.
Vanille blinks down at the large paper bag before her door, examining the unfamiliar handwriting across the side that spells out her name. She crouches in front of the mystery package, peering into it, and her expression melts from curiosity into fond excitement.
No, she thinks to herself, childishly burying her face in the fluffy blanket with a small laugh. It really isn't bad here in the least.
