Girl Talk Thursday: Fictional Five

Nov 13, 2009 05:06

I have never done Girl Talk Thursday before, and I know that it is not technically Thursday where I am presently, but I needed something to desperately get my mind off of my insomnia.

Plus, fictional crushes. We all know I’m a sucker for that.

Without any further ado, MY FICTIONAL FIVE.

01. Betsy “Psylocke” Braddock, Marvel Comics

There’s something about a mysterious, body-switched, purple-haired British model-turned-ninja that really resonates with me - even if she does wear a ludicrously over-sexualized uniform. Even though she fights crime in a throng, she has a depth of character (when in the right writer’s hands) and strength that I absolutely love. Above all, she’s unique, even in her original body.

Psylocke is one of the classic X-Men characters, even if she doesn’t quite have the mainstream popularity of Storm, Rogue, or Jean Grey. I blame the 90s cartoon for that (even though she does appear in an episode or two).

02. Leeloominaï Lekatariba Lamina-Tchaï Ekbat De Sebat, The Fifth Element

Why yes, I did have to copy and paste her name from Wikipedia. How kind of you to notice.

Leeloo and Psylocke both have the notoriety of being two women who made me realize I liked women in the first place. Granted, at this point I just thought I appreciated their unique choice in hair colour and beauty. (Hey, I never said I wasn’t superficial. Gosh.)

When it comes to Leeloo, I can’t find much that isn’t to like. She is her own element. Wow. She has no sense of modesty, can kick ass just as well (if not better) than her male counterpart, and has some incredibly cute mannerisms that just make me want to cuddle her.

03. Data, Star Trek: The Next Generation

You would not believe how difficult it was to find a decent picture of Data for this post. Data’s sallow complexion makes him ridiculously unphotogenic.

TNG was a huge part of my childhood, which could likely make Data one of the first fictional crushes I ever had. Though it could have been easy for writers to turn Data into a variation on Spock, they took a different route: unlike Spock, Data wanted to feel emotion. As a result, the android became very quirky, and also made for an excellent plot device in a pinch - such as with the episode where he is “possessed” by various deities from an archaic civilization.

Other Star Trek characters that didn’t make the list: Dr. Leonard McCoy (both versions); Elim Garak, and Nyota Uhura (also both versions)

04. Jonothon “Chamber” Starsmore, Marvel Comics

I know I already stuck a comic book character on here - one from the same universe, too - but I had to include Chamber for two reasons:

For one, he is just so gorram tragic. As this angsty image can testify, he is one of the most miserable characters in the entirety of comics. He is morose, bitter, British, Goth, and a musician. What girl (gay or otherwise) doesn’t love that?

Another aspect is that he is inherently asexual. He has no mouth. The fact that he is nothing more than a vessel for psionic energy indicates he may not work in certain areas any longer. I don’t know why, but this has been some sort of strange niche among my fictional crushes. First with Piccolo from Dragonball Z, then with Nataku from X/1999.

A large portion of my life was spent believing Data was asexual as well, but, um, Tasha Yar. First episode. ‘Nuff Said.

Other Marvel Universe characters that didn’t make the list: Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner), Blink (Clarice Ferguson), X-23 (Laura Kinney), the White Queen (Emma Frost), Polaris (Lorna Dane)

05. John Doe, Se7en

And this is the point where I lose everyone. That’s fine. John Doe is a very, very frightening man. He is sick, twisted, and homicidal. He is like the second coming of Jack the Ripper.

I just love serial killers. I recognize that I could never date one in real life - unless he was Dexter or something - but there is something dangerously appealing about them. You know how some people like vampires? I like serial killers.

Other serial killers that didn’t make the list: Dexter Morgan, Hannibal Lecter VIII (young and old), Patrick Bateman
