My new favourite show - a picspam

I'm currently boring anyone who'll listen about this.

What is it? I hear you cry.
Anno 1790 is a Swedish drama series from 2011. Think Scandinavian noir but set in the late 18th century.

If you like crime drama, period settings, pretty men, conspiracy, romance and squeefully adorable slashy pairings, then this is the show for you.

The show is centred around Swedish army surgeon Dåådh who reluctantly takes on the job as district police commissioner in Stockholm and finds himself solving a series of brutal murders. But Dåådh is conflicted - he's a closet revolutionary torn between his commitment to his work and progressive ideals.
He also struggles with his love for his employer’s wife Magdalena, who shares his vision for a just society. And he's practically married to his faithful sidekick Freund.

Grisly murders, corruption, 18th century forensics, revolutionary politics and romance, all tied up in a pretty period drama. What's not to like?

Oh, and this guy.

This Peter Eggers. he plays Dåådh.

His job is to look pretty and ginger and solve crimes.

He even look pretty when he's being tied up and beaten

He also does this with his eyes. A lot.

Dåådh has a penchant for long leather frock coats and big hats.

He also likes to bathe a lot. Just saying.

His trusty servant is Freund.

Freund pouts.

He also has a very deep and meaningful relationship with his brandy flask.

Freund is deeply religious and is keen to point out to Dåådh the error of his ways.

The brandy flask and the judging really come into their own when it concerns Dåådh's relationships with women.
Read into that what you will.

Together they investigate murders....

interrogate suspects with the help of their fearsome Interrogation Scarves™.....

and Dåådh performs autopsies while Freund tries to hold on to the contents of his stomach.....

but basically these guys are squeefully adorable together

But it's not just Dåådh and Freund. This is a drama with high production vales and understated performances. The stories are satisfyingly complex and intriguing, and there's a great deal of attention to period detail and the social and gender politics of the time. The whole thing is set against a backdrop of paranoia due to the social upheaval in Europe around the time of the French Revolution. There's some wonderful characters and the subtlties of the interactions between the two leads are squeefuly gorgeous.

Watch it.

EDIT: I found an autopsy scene. Enjoy.
