tell me how you do it flist

In my continuing adventures of trying to understand how I think, I've been pondering my fic reading habits.

★ I always seem to pick one central figure from a fandom and what I choose to read revolves around them
☆ Supernatural RPF - Jensen Ackles
☆ Supernatural - Dean Winchester
☆ Adam Lambert - Adam Lambert
☆ Stargate Atlantis - Rodney McKay
☆ Angel - Wesley Wyndam-Pryce

With Lambert the choice of my central figure is pretty obvious lol, so I'm going to exclude him for a while. But why the others?

THE PRETTY - Sure, that works for Jensen. And obviously Dean. But Rodney? Not so much. And Jason Mamoa [who plays Ronon in SGA] is really hot and yet nada on the fic interest front. I think Weley is good looking,  but so is Angel. So if it's not looks...

CHARACTER - I always thought Wesley was the most interesting character in Angel and had the best overall story arc and Rodney has a horrendous personality that's also totally endearing at the same time, plus he always has the best insults, but Jensen? I like the dude, but I feel like I know nothing about him. He's a little cypherish to me. And I find Jared's exuberance much more entertaining.

POSSIBILITY - Definitely works for Jensen. Sure there are fandom tropes that are always included to convey the 'Jensenness' of Jensen, but he's still pretty malleable in turns of story so you can imagine him blending into a billion different situations. But Rodney is always very much Rodney...maybe there's also the opposite possibility of how a very fixed character can be inserted into something whilst maintaining integrity and not being too disconcerting?

I like to read fic with these characters be it gen or any pairing. I'll happily read Jensen/Adam Lambert. Hell I've read Adam/Joe Jonas and liked it [and for me that's a pretty shuddering choice of partner]. But I don't ever feel inclined to read Jared/other or Angel/other or John Sheppard/other. So I guess for me, the cast of a fic is the most important factor in deciding what I will or won't read.

How I come to that casting decision, I don't know. From working this all out above, I think I do it on a fandom by fandom basis using all of the above jumbled up. Huh.

I guess next in the reading choice layer is what I definitely wont read regardless of cast, quality, whatever - and for me that's death!fic / terminal illness fic, both of which are a big no-no for me and will have me hitting the backpage button as fast as my chubby little fingers will allow.

Which kind of means that plot comes right near the end of the queue. It might effect my overall enjoyment of a story, but seems to play a minimal part in my decision on whether to read or not. Doesn't that seem strange to you? It does me.

How do you chose what to read?
