It does seem totally unfair after all that SKate buildup to just award her to Jack. Sigh. Remember the first six episodes of S3, where they left everyone standing in the rain, Kate screaming from the cage and Sawyer about to be executed? And then took a 5-month hiatus? Ahhhh, Lost.

I only started watching LOST recently... and having watched all the episodes in quick succession... it really makes no sense to me that they spend all this time working on Skate, and then throw it all away...

Was it easier to understand when it happened gradually, episode by episode? I can't really see it ever being satisfying (Though, I guess alot of other fans were satisfied with the pairings in the end ^__^)

Oh yeah, I was a hard-core SKate fan all the way through Season Four, when the writers made it clear (in the flash-forwards) that Jack and Kate would pretty much end up together. And by the series finale I'd decided that I loved Sawyer so much I didn't care who he ended up with, since Juliet was kickass anyway.... but I'm pretty sure the writers were leaning towards Sawyer and Kate for a long time. I'm still bitter that they gave us that hawt, soooo steamy handcuffed-torture kiss and then threw it away!

Season three just dives into it full speed from there. Sure, Kate is worried about Jack. But Sawyer is in the cage right across from her, and he's the one who's always on her mind. They cut rocks together. The second kiss occurs. Sawyer, stingy Sawyer, shares his fish biscuit cookie with her. When Kate finds out how to break out of her cage, she refuses to leave Sawyer. She'd rather be trapped with him than free (or, to be more accurate, *running*) without him. She knows that the life they have at the Others' camp is awful and uncertain, but she WILL NOT LEAVE SAWYER BEHIND ( ... )

Thing is, even after the writers present suliet, there are complications as soon as Kate arrives in season five. Keep in mind that Kate and the others have only been with the Dharma people for a few days when everything explodes. It doesn't take long for Skate to resume. Even Juliet encourages Sawyer to be with Kate. It's Sawyer's stubbornness and his need to be the "good guy" (like Jack) that contributes to Juliet's eventual death. Season six is more of Sawyer overcompensating and feeling guilty over Juliet. After the initial mourning, though, Skate resumes. Just as friends, at first. Because there are a million other things going on, and Jack is still present. Even the ending for the show doesn't look too promising because while Kate and Sawyer leave the island together, Kate's more distraught over Jack's impending death. "Flashback", so to speak, to Sawyer's problem in season five ( ... )

Definitely agree on the Skate essay contest!

I have a LOT to respond to in your post, but I have to leave for work in about ten minutes. Do you mind if I email you my responses instead?
